Tired, Wired, and Running on Empty: How Somatic Therapy Relieves Chronic Stress and Restores Mind-Body Balance

Most of us don’t think of ourselves as “stressed” in any dramatic sense. We’re just busy. Behind on emails. Running from a meeting to a pickup line to a sink full of dishes. There’s no single event we could point to and say, “that’s when it started.” It’s more like a slow accumulation. One tight shoulder, one shallow breath, one restless night at a time. Then one day you realize you can’t remember the last time your body actually felt relaxed.

This is the kind of stress I see most often in my practice. It’s not loud. It’s quietly working in the background to reshape how you move through your day, how you sleep, and how you hold your body.

Stress isn’t just in your head—it’s in your muscles

You Need to Shut off the Survival Response

When you’re under continuous pressure, even the everyday kind that comes from parenting, finances, or a packed schedule, your body responds as if it’s facing a physical threat. Muscles brace, breathing shallowly stays near the top of the chest, and digestion slows down.

That survival response is helpful in brief spurts. The trouble is when the switch never flips off. Over time, that quiet, chronic stress starts showing up as persistent neck aches, “tired but wired” nights where you can’t fall asleep, a constant mental fog by 2 p.m., and a short fuse with the people you love.

None of this means anything is fundamentally wrong with you. It simply means your nervous system has been doing exactly what it was designed to do without enough opportunity to recover. It has temporarily forgotten how to rest.

Why talking about it isn’t always enough

Stress isn’t just how you think

You can understand your stress intellectually and still feel completely trapped by it. That’s because stress doesn’t just live in your thoughts.

Talk therapy is wonderful for gaining clarity, but somatic therapy works directly with the physical container. Instead of just analyzing stress, we notice where it sits, how it restricts your breath, and how it shapes your posture. Those physical sensations become our starting point for guiding your body back to a state of safety.

Somatic Therapy Stress Relief Practices

The practices we use aren’t complicated. We aren’t overhauling your life; we’re giving your nervous system small, repeatable moments of relief.

  • Grounding & Touch: Simply feeling your feet flat on the floor or placing a warm hand on your chest re-anchors your nervous system in the present moment when your mind is spinning ahead to tomorrow’s to-do list.

  • Micro-Movements: Gentle stretching or shaking out built-up tension releases the physical “bracing” that happens after hours of sitting and rushing.

  • Somatic Breathwork: Slowing down your exhale signals directly to the brain that the danger has passed, clearing mental fog far faster than forcing yourself to “just calm down.”

I think of a client I worked with, a mom who was managing everything at once and simply couldn’t slow down. She came into sessions talking fast, her whole body braced, the way anyone looks when they’ve been running on adrenaline for months. It showed up everywhere, like in her shoulders, her breath, even in how quickly her eyes moved around the room.

One day, in the middle of a sentence, I gently paused her and invited her to look around the room and notice whatever caught her eye. As she did, a deep breath came in on its own. Her shoulders dropped two inches. That simple three-second pause was all her nervous system needed to realize it didn’t have to keep fighting.

Restoring balance isn’t a one-time fix

The goal is less stress and a healthier response

The goal of somatic work isn’t to eliminate stress from your life. We all know that’s impossible. The goal is to build a body that knows how to come back down after it’s been activated.

With practice, you start recovering faster after a hard day, sleeping more deeply, and feeling present in your own life again. Life might not get any less busy, but your body finally knows how to lay down what it’s been carrying.

If you’ve been running on empty for longer than you’d like to admit, you don’t have to keep pushing through it alone. Reach out to Evolve Wellness & Counseling at 913-213-1272 or visit us in Prairie Village, Kansas to schedule a session and start restoring that balance.
